#TimesUp

Yes, I am also part of the movement and I think that every woman and also all the men should be too. This wave was generated when renowned Hollywood celebrities Ashley Judd, Angelina Jolie and Gwneth Paltrow along with few others came forth to tell their stories of sexual harassment. Since then this little wave created a tornado and many bigwigs were swept away.

Charging a man with harassment accusation, especially if he holds power is no easy task for any woman whether she lives in United States or in Pakistan. The first hurdle which women face in every society is victim-shaming, which means, that in some way the woman was responsible to attract the negative attention of a man because as they say, a man is a man- he cannot control his impulses. So it is entirely the duty of a woman to not provoke those impulses.

But then my question is, how does a seven year child who was molested two days ago have provoked her perpetrator’s impulses? How do woman covered in their chaadars sitting within the boundaries of their homes provoke those impulses? How could nuns wearing the least attractive clothes provoke impulses?  How do small children in schools provoke impulses of their teachers? How does a girl with covered head and abaya, catching morning bus for her university provoke those impulses?

So it is not about the physical attraction or how the woman was attracting or distracting the poor man from the path of his righteousness but it is about the Power of a strong person over a weak person.

Then we should also decide, what we actually mean by the word ‘character’. And please also enlighten me key yeh kharab character asal mein hot kiya hai?

Let’s take the recent example of Mahira Khan who was photographed outside a restaurant, wearing a backless dress and smoking cigarette. Now everyone jumped on the picture saying: dekha iss ladki ka character hi kharab hai. So if Mahira wears kameez shalwar with a long dupatta then she is a girl with good character. Yaar character naa hoa sabzi hogai subah sahi hota hai aur sham ko kharab ho jata hai.

If we take such one-dimensional things like clothes and a habit of smoking to define a character, then trust me dude I have seen many people who pray five times a day, regularly perform Umrah and Hajj but they defraud, lie and cheat their customers from morning till night 24/7; they take and give bribes freely and some harass every young girl they meet in a disguise of calling them their daughter and sister.

I have seen women who recite tasbeehs 22 hours a day, saying Allhumdollilah and Subhan Allah every time they sit, eat or talk but when they gossip or do politics within their family they are able to create great disasters within minutes. So can you comfortably say that people with such tendencies are of good character? At least I can’t.

It is the time that we trash out our rotten ideas of good and bad character and judge people not on the basis of their appearance rather their behaviour.

Character is the essence of a human being, it is his/her soul, so it is intangible and cannot be observed through the eyes but can only be realized.

After clearing all the mental trash we need to provide each other, men and women both, in our families and social circle the support to raise voice against harassment, the encouragement to speak the truth and the strength to fight.

Have a great evening!

Sony Syed (Day 572).

Very Well Composed Sonya! I second each and every word but unfortunately we live in a male dominating society in fact if I ll use the word ‘World’ in place of our society I believe it can be justified to a certain extent as I ve been in Canada for sometime and still every other day I come across the news that some wild hunter or a group caught abusing kids and trust me there are many issues that are often subject to moral panics such as Youth Crime/Gun Crime, Binge Drinking, child abuse, sex and violent behaviour, drug abuse, paedophilia, but yes the only difference in these advance countries is that for a criminal there’s no plea as no resourceful politician is behind their back.
I simply don’t understand that a Childhood is idealised as a garden, protected by walls and hedges, where nature flourished at its perfect best. It is often envied and honoured then how can a rascal even think of seeing a kid as his hunt??
Baby Zainab and kids like her rest their case with God. Alhumdulilah I am happy that there’s death, else every other person would have been a Pharaoh or worst than him.

Hi Love, thank you so much for sharing your thoughts on the blog. I absolutely agree with you but honestly child molesters don't see them as children rather they believe them to be some kind of lifeless objects. I really pray that no child or a parent would ever have to endure such a traumatic experience.
