Day 38

There are some days which completely drain out the process of thinking, you want to speak but are unable to find right words to express. Another Friday went by with sheer swiftness; the pace with which days are passing is astounding. There is so much to do, so much to say, alas! Time surpasses us.

News channel are increasingly becoming an integral part of our daily lives, no dinner is considered complete without the familiar sounds of anchor persons and political debates in background.

Few days ago I accidentally but fortunately, while surfing channels heard a song which attracted me magnetically towards it, Noor a Pakistani film actress was dancing on the beats of that song with somewhat of a fusion of modern moves and our very traditional Punjabi film oriented steps. I just stayed on the channel for hardly 3 seconds but I couldn’t get off that one line of the song from my mind. So today I finally looked up for that song on our Godsend internet and voila! I found it. The song is from a famous Pakistani Punjabi movie Chan Veryam, the lead actors were the superstars of that era Mr. Sultan Rahi and Anjuman Begum. The song was sung by none other than Madam Noor Jehan. I found the video of the original song on Youtube, Rahi Sahab was not much of the singing and dancing hero but extremely popular for his typical high pitched dialogue delivery something which was his unique trait. But Anjuman begum won me over her choreography. Honestly I was bit scared to see the original song and was expecting something very loud and out of control dancing; nevertheless the song was picturised with decent yet adequate fast paced and rhythmic moves, something which seriously lack in today’s cinema.

Rahi Saheb was a philanthropist and action icon for the lovers of Punjabi films. He appeared in more than 700 Punjabi and Urdu-language movies, and is named in the Guinness Book of Records as the most Prolific Actor. When he was 45 or 50 he decided to quit movies completely because he did not like to appear as the lead actor or hero anymore with young actresses. However, on huge pressure from all film quarters and his fans he decided to continue working in movies, because the already shattering Pakistan film industry was solely surviving on his films and more than 50-100 people were able to earn their livelihoods working on daily wages on his films’ sets. Some of his major films included Maula Jatt, Sher Khan, Chan Veryam, Kaley Chore, and The Godfather. His successful film career came to an end on 9 January 1996, when he was shot and killed by unidentified persons in a highway robbery on Grand Trunk Road near Gujranwala. He was on his way back to Lahore from Islamabad. At the time of death, he was 58 years old. To this day his murder is unsolved.

It is heartbreaking that we have such gems with us but there is no appreciation for them, we are bombarded by cross border music, glamour and cinema that we lost our identity in them.

Here are the links to two versions of the song Way Sonay Deya Kangna that I became a fan of:

PTV sung by Madam in later years:

This is the original song from the movie Chan Veryam:

Enjoy & Love Love Love Love…….

Sonya.
