Day 232

Image
The person who should have carefully read my earlier post “Health is wealth” was me; before writing the post I mentioned that I haven’t been feeling well. First it was sore throat then it was heavy flu. I didn’t feel any weakness so I carried on with my routines in fact exhausted myself beyond my capacity. So on Friday night I slept early and woke up on Saturday way longer than my usual routine. Thankfully I didn’t have to go anywhere so it was a long restful day. But by evening I again did some work which exhausted me even more. By night I thought I might probably collapse due to my overwhelming week both emotionally and physically. I think it was more due to the stress I was taking which ultimately took a toll on me. My immune system initially tried to alert me but I never bothered, I’m doing better now but still lack the kick. My commitment to the blog and the will to be amongst you supersedes all. Enough of me, now let’s switch to someone else. There is a lot o...

Health is wealth

I went to a bookstore to get some greeting cards for Eid and dear oh dear it was a real puzzler. Every card was designed with either red roses or red hearts and if you find something less glittery then it is for children. Goodness it was difficult to find appropriate cards.    After a long scrutiny I did manage to buy some good greeting cards. Wishing everyone by a call or even better with SMS is fine and easy but it lacks that personal touch.  My head and nose are jammed with flu but thank God no fever. October being a dusty dry season is mostly responsible for hay fever, sinus, flu or asthma so if any one of you suffers from asthma or sinus then look after yourself well, especially children they are more prone to getting ill in this season. I have and tested this and if you like you could use these acupressure methods on both adults (for 2 minutes, twice a day) and children (for 1 minute, twice a day). For sinus , press all fingertips of both hands ...

Day 230

There are moments in one’s life where the boundaries of hope and faith are pushed beyond its regular limit. In pleasant times when all is going fine no one bothers to understand the true concepts of hope it is in those not-so-good-times when the real test is taken. Sometimes things happen around you but irrespective of who is getting tested you are bound to get affected as well. This time a dear friend is put to such a test and I sincerely pray that she comes out of all the challenges in her life with all the peace and health. I apologize for I might not be in the best of my spirits, I am anxious and concerned. Yet I don’t want any of you to get affected so I shall move on to the weather which has affected me a great deal, including a mild flu. In the afternoon it felt as I am going to melt due to the heat, although everyone around is not complaining like me. I tried to switch on the AC but then immediately my sore throat began to sore bit more than the usual. Having no ...

Rickshaw adventure

Image
What a travelling day I had, I ventured from one end of the city into another and by now I feel as if my arms and feet are numb just by sitting in the car. Later in evening we had to go Saddar, downtown area a business hub in Karachi, for some work. Due to evening hours roads were jam packed with cars but we had to get at our destination quickly so instant decision was made to leave the car and opt for a three wheeler we karachites call Rickshaw.    I so much wanted to travel in the new CNG versions. The earlier models of rickshaws some of which are still visible could easily dislocate our internal organs. Whenever I used to go in them my liver probably changed places with my kidneys and stomach was placed near lungs. Then who can forget those infamous head bumps on every speed breaker. So I did my work by getting there just in time and returning within an hour. On the other hand if we have used car it would have taken us more than 3 hours. I must say ...

Comedies

I always fail to understand Karachi’s weather, in early October it was breezy and when we are approaching November it is getting hotter. Or may be when you have to meet deadlines then it is natural to feel the heat. In between meeting or skipping deadlines or in our grueling daily chores, I believe it is really important to keep calm nerves. Some of us opt for music, some for prayers, some might take a walk and I, like many other find rescue in comedy TV plays. Our local channels should be our first choice however, with the shortage of good comedies I have to opt for across the border channels.  My favorite TV play is Taarak Mehta Ka Oolta Chashma which is shown on SAB TV at 8 pm. This is the only serial I dedicatedly watch, it’s a play which revolves around Gujrati family of Jetha Lal. I must say the play has effortless natural performances by every character. The drama is very simple and story lines are even simpler focusing on daily life of a common man. I was int...

Lazy Sunday

Around 12.30 in noon I was relaxing on the terrace taking in vitamin d or whatever it is supposed to give. The door bell rang and we had guests. At first I thought somebody came to give us a wedding invitation, suddenly it struck me that they would be coming upstairs to meet us. Oh Goodness I panicked because neither my drawing room nor was I in a presentable condition, in fact I looked more like an alien who has just walked out of the spaceship. So I rushed to do some emergency clean up for the room and then Adeel my youngest cousin who was still in his sleeping suit came rushing to me and said “woh log oper aarahe hain, run!!” (they are coming upstairs, run!). It felt as if my hands have the speed of lightening. Thankfully everything including me was taken care of within 2 minutes. I changed from an alien to a human being and in all my calmness welcome our guests. Nobody could have guessed what I or this room looked few minutes ago. The guests were our family friends a...

Being a lawyer continued ….

I am happy to be signing in at 9 pm, it is my ideal time to write post but its not easy for me to operate like this everyday as I get lazy easily, and when one thing is delayed then every other chore is inevitably deferred. Before beginning I am so thankful to my dedicated readers who have made this blog a family space and showered me with their love and blessings. Thank you all for your encouraging emails, comments and calls. All I can say that I am truly humbled.  Thank you Star for all your appreciation, and yes you are absolutely right that this is the real key to grow in any profession. Thank you Fouzia dear for taking time out of your busy schedule and responsibilities for reading my little blog; and calling me to give your love and wonderful comments. To my readers who are unfamiliar with Fouzia, she is a lawyer and my colleague at the law firm Muzaffar & Associates where I worked in those crucial early years of my law practice. I sincerely hope...

Being a lawyer

Image
Since last week I was quite down, had backaches and finally yesterday I officially had sore throat with slight fever. My indisposition prevented me from writing the post last night, so many apologies. Allhumdolillah I am feeling better now. Entire day went in drafting and redrafting a legal document. Everything has to be taken care of and precisely incorporated in a single document. Then it has to be read minutely to correct any error or to make changes, if required. After completing any document I make my family members or friend or a colleague even the younger lot in my home to read it. If they easily read and understood what I am trying to say then my mission is accomplished. The idea here is that even a legal document should be clear and straightforward even so a layperson would easily understand it.   Although it is not a common practice to draft simple language legal documents, somehow we lawyers believe that unless everything is complicated and overwhelming fo...

Idiot Box

Thank you so much everybody for your warm response to yesterday’s post. I have read all your emails and it is nice to know that my story resonated with you. I have to admit that even writing Lights & Goodbyes was fun.  In the background I hear voice of famous television anchor revealing the doing or misdoings of people in power raising political temperature every moment. I could never get myself to watch these shows with dedication, it feels as if same issues are repeated over and over again. Everybody comes on TV as a theatrical actor playing their role and exiting.  As for the Pakistani TV plays they are beyond me. Either they have become too real life or they talk of fantastical lives. Showing reality of any society could prove to be vital for any positive change in the way of our thinking but art and obscenity has a very fine and thin line between them and at times our plays' cross these fine lines easily. Moreover, on every channel I get to see only fiv...

Light & Goodbyes

My mind and thinking is flying a rocket- with so many things that need my immediate attention. I have tried to complete some work but it keeps on coming and getting pilled up. I need to focus on one thing at a time and avoid multitasking. I have missed yesterday’s post but couldn’t help it as slumber took the better of me. It is annoying not to have appropriate lighting in my room, I have golden energy savers and honestly they have blinded me. So I have to use additional light of lamp on my table to see the keyboard clearly. The lamp shines on the glass surface of my table which gives extra shiny reflection to my eyes. Everybody has forced me off and on to change the lighting of my room to moonlight but I am stuck with my decision because moonlight bulbs depress me. God I need help! There is also another reason of my uneasiness and that is selling off my bright red colored laptop. I have kept it with utmost care since 2007, respectfully held it on my shoulders, with love c...

Love Sundae

For the last one hour I was busy writing the post for today and when I finished it whoosh my laptop died. Let alone recovering the data it was difficult to even start the computer. Whatever I wrote was still fresh in mind but to reproduce it with the same expressions is challenging. So I began with my Sunday morning. From the lazy Sunday it turned into fast track active day. In the heat of after noon it was not a really pleasant experience to go for grocery shopping. There wasn’t any option so we had to go out and I think everybody who was doing the same sort of shopping wasn’t too thrilled about it either. After a delayed breakfast we had even delayed lunch-cum-supper-cum-dinner of the most tempting Pullao at 7. 30 pm but I must say the wait was worth every moment. Yesterday evening went fairly well with a family dinner at our most beloved restaurant Salt n Pepper Village . Being a buffet eatery it requires proper strategic planning from its guests or else you would be ...

Prayers for a friend

As I was preparing to start yesterday’s post I suddenly felt drowsy and slept almost immediately. What more one could expect at 10.30 pm because this is my time to dose off. Although for past few days the sleep hasn’t been well and I wake up earlier before the designated time. A text message from my friend whose near one would be going into surgery next Wednesday and we all hope and pray that it all goes well and may health and prosperity showers on my dearest friend. As much as I try in futility to move on with my daily work yet worry keeps on pricking. People say that under these circumstances what can one do but pray. I wonder why praying is always left as the last resort. Like in the movies when the doctors says, “we can’t do anything for the patient now so its time you start praying”. I believe that prayers should be resorted to as the first thing and not as a means of human helplessness. And the sleep strikes again so I would end this post here. With prayers ...

My Life Class

Day started with a bit of chaos and some worrying news about one of our friend’s health. At home we all pray that the crisis which has befallen our dear friend soon transforms into peace, health and prosperity. It is in these moments when we could truly experience our infinite love and bonding with each other. One just wish to have a magic wand and everything to change as one desires, but no problem we have prayers which always create a miraculous effect and all one has to do is to hold on. And “this too shall pass”…. Many apologies for I might not be in the high sprits today. One moment all seems to be perfect and the next moment everything changes with a blink of an eye. So I have learned one lesson that do whatever you need to do now, call the person you want to talk to, meet and mend your relations, do not wait for tomorrow when you believe the right moment will come. The right moment is here, now and not tomorrow or day after tomorrow. Live your life fully in the now. ...

School & Teachers

Ah finally the results, well not mine but my cousin Adeel ’s who thankfully went through in Class 9 th board exams. He came upstairs very excited, showed me his roll number. Congratulations and thank yous’ were exchanged and then we chatted for almost an hour. He was so joyful and I was happier to see him like this. These moments with children are so precious for them and love and encouragement from elders remain with them for a lifetime. I have been fortunate in my academic life because my mother never pressurized me into getting highest of grades. I never believed in any competition so I never encountered any competition, I always got what I truly wanted. During my college tuitions we had in our midst a matriculation topper, she was a lovely girl but mostly anxious for her studies. One day while she was arguing to brutally defeat any competition which comes in our way and our Botany Professor Sir Abbasi said something beautiful in his response to her.    He...
